BEHIND a series of high cliffs, a monument stands tall on the banks of the Cisokan River in Ciranjang sub-district, Cianjur, Indonesia. The monument looks dreary. Plastic waste and leaves are scattered around it. A line of faded writing can be read on the body of the monument: “Peristiwa Pertempuran, Pasukan Banteng-Hisbulloh/Sabilillah-Rakyat lawan Tentara Inggris" (The Battle of Banteng-Hisbulloh/Sabilillah-People against the British Army).
