Anyone researching and writing about the Indonesian national movement must have acknowledged three important works by Petrus Blumberger. As a colonial official, he had access to official sources, from government edicts to Dutch parliamentary minutes.
Petrus Blumberger was born John Theodoor Petrus in Semarang on December 2, 1873. His father, Satoor Stephan Petrus (1839-1902), was a merchant born in Isfahan, Persia, now Iran. His mother, Mariam Eleazar Gasper (1851-1896), was born in Bushir. She was the daughter from the second marriage of Eleazar Gregory Gasper (1808-1859), a prominent Armenian merchant in Batavia who founded Gasper & Co. and remained in the city for three generations.
