His struggle to unify Italy alongside Giuseppe Garibaldi, which began in 1846, finally came to an end in 1871. Under Garibaldi, he rose from captain to general, leading troops against the old feudal lords and their followers.
After the struggle ended, Gerolamo Bixio, also known as Nino Bixio (1821–1873)—a former subordinate of Garibaldi—was appointed a senator in his homeland. However, he returned to the sea once everything was settled. This was because Nino Bixio had been a member of the Royal Sardinian Navy before joining Garibaldi.
Upon his return to the sea, Nino Bixio was assigned to command a transport ship named the Maddaloni. This steamship secured an important contract in the Dutch East Indies, whose government had been sending military expeditions to Aceh since March 1873.
