To this day, Tarumanagara is still recognized as the oldest kingdom in Java. Its golden age occurred during the reign of King Purnawarman, who reigned from the late 4th century to the mid-5th century CE.
However, among the many archaeological findings, only Purnawarman is explicitly named. The Tugu Inscription does indeed bear another name, Rajaresi, but that was the title of King Purnawarman’s grandfather.
“The historical evidence discovered to date is all related to Purnawarman, indicating that he reigned for at least 22 years. However vague it may be, Purnawarman stated that he had a grandfather, mentioned in the Tugu Inscription,” explained Ayatrohaedi et al. in Kisah Tarumanagara dalam Naskah (Laporan Penelitian, 1988) (The Story of Tarumanagara in Manuscripts (Research Report, 1988)).
