The origins of Tarumanagara as the first kingdom on the island of Java are still debated by experts and historians. The consensus is that Tarumanagara existed for no more than three centuries. However, there are still differing accounts of its collapse.

Various historical sources mention that Tarumanagara existed from the 4th to the 7th century AD. From archaeological findings in the form of seven inscriptions, only one ruler's name can be proven with certainty: King Purnawarman.
