Giant bamboo stalks towered overhead, providing shade in the Bamboo Garden on the west side of the Bogor Botanical Gardens (KRB) that afternoon of May 12, 2026. In the center of the garden stood a Dutch cemetery, although there was one grave with an English epitaph belonging to a former British Royal Navy (RN) officer: Captain Joseph Drury.
“To the memory of Captn J. Drury, R.N., who died on the 1st of March 1835. Aged 51 years. Much regretted by his relatives and friends,” reads the epitaph on the gray marble headstone.
Captain Drury’s grave is just one of 42 graves scattered across the 87-hectare garden. However, only 38 of the graves have legible inscriptions on their headstones, allowing for the identification of those buried there.
