Sugar Technology from China

The Chinese contributed to the development of the sugar industry in Indonesia. The simple technology used by them still exists in several regions.

IN pursuit of a better life, a carpenter left Banten, which was at war with the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Batavia, under VOC rule, offered more promise. He quickly became involved in the construction of the city of Batavia. Thanks to his good relationship with the VOC, he enjoyed many advantages in his various ventures. One of these was the cultivation of sugar cane and the establishment of a sugar factory.
