As a private television station that aired telenovelas, SCTV was often playfully referred to as “Saluran Cerita Telenovela” (Telenovela-centric Channel). Throughout the 1990s, SCTV aired several top-rated telenovela series that garnered high ratings. These included Kassandra (1992), Maria Mercedes (1993), Morena Clara (1994), Maria la del Barrio (1995), and Esmeralda (1997).
In 2000, SCTV aired Esmeralda for the second time. This rerun of the Mexican telenovela from Televisa was due to high viewer interest. Esmeralda, which stars Leticia Calderon, tells the story of a blind girl who was switched at birth, whose love is hindered by social status, and her struggle to regain her sight and find love.
The premiere of Esmeralda used an English dub. The rerun, however, used Indonesian. Yet, the second broadcast didn't go smoothly due to protests. “The airing of the telenovela Esmeralda was halted due to protests from the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI),” reported the Bali Post on July 1, 2000.
