ON March 20, 2002, the Dutch government commemorated the 400th anniversary of the Vereenigde Oostindie Compagnie (VOC). Queen Beatrix gave a speech that was broadcast live throughout the Netherlands. Towards the peak of the celebration, Gadjah Mada University historian Sri Margana, then still studying for a master's degree at Leiden University, was asked by a professor to join the event. The professor was also asked to give a speech before the queen.
