Thilly Weissenborn, Exoticism Without Eroticism

This is the story of the first professional female photographer in the Dutch East Indies, who showcased the exoticism of Bali without exhibiting nudity.

TWO Balinese women stood, staring at the camera. They were bare-chested; one holding a vessel above her head, the other one wearing a batik headscarf. The girls' poses and their naked body were far from erotic. The photo, taken around 1922, is one of the works of Margarethe Mathilde Weissenborn.
