A Mutiny That Stirred the Waters

The people of the Dutch East Indies and the Netherlands were divided into two camps. The mutiny on the ship De Zeven Provinciën became a campaign issue in the Dutch parliamentary elections.

THE mutiny of the crew of De Zeven Provinciën which protested against wage cuts, quickly sparked various reactions, both in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and in the Netherlands. In Batavia, criticism came from the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies, B.C. de Jonge, who in his speech on February 7, 1933, called the actions of the Dutch East Indies warship sailors irresponsible.
