BLACK and mourning have always been inseparable. The custom of wearing black in mourning, according to Françoise Piponnier and Perrine Mane in Dress in the Middle Ages, originated in medieval Spain and was later emulated by French and English nobles. One of them was Phillip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, who insisted on wearing black from the murder of his father, John the Fearless, in 1419 until the end of his reign in 1467. Not only that, but his carriage, entourage, and residence were also ornate in black.
