THREE members of the Film Censorship Board (BSF) watched a new movie called Perawan Desa (The Village Virgin) in 1978. The film was directed by Frank Rorimpandey, written by Putu Wijaya, and produced by Safari Sinar Sakti.
Like other films, Perawan Desa had to pass censorship before being screened in theaters. As a sign of passing the censorship, a Certificate of Passing Censorship must be included with the roll of film sent to the theater.
Perawan Desa is based on the true story of 17-year-old Sumarijem in Yogyakarta in 1970. She was gang-raped by the sons of officials. In the end, the perpetrators were acquitted of the charges. This case is known by the people of Yogyakarta as the Sum Kuning case. In the movie, Sumarijem's character was changed to Sumira, played by Yati Surachman.
